The Ultimate Guide to Scheduling Pet Sitting: Everything You Need to Know Before Booking!

Updated: Mar 2

Are you ready to take a break but feeling anxious about leaving your furry friends behind? Finding the right pet sitter can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time travelers. Whether you are embarking on a weekend getaway or a long vacation, knowing how to schedule pet sitting can give you peace of mind. This guide will walk you through key aspects like pricing, services, and communication to ensure your pets receive the care they deserve while you are away.

Understanding Pet Sitting Services

Pet sitting is much more than a service; it is about providing a safe and loving environment for your pets when you are not around. A typical pet sitting package includes care for up to two pets, either cats or dogs, for a flat rate of $50 per 24 hours. For example, if you have two dogs, you will pay this rate for both of them.

Additional Pet Costs

If you have more than two pets, you will incur extra charges:

  • Dogs: $10 per dog per day

  • Cats: $5 per cat per day

For smaller animals like fish, rabbits, or birds, the cost is $5 per cage or tank per day. If you are booking solely for these pets, the first two enclosures cost $50 per night, with additional ones costing $5 each.

It is crucial to discuss the care requirements for any livestock or outdoor animals before booking, as those rates will be based on specific needs.

The Scheduling Process

When you're ready to schedule pet sitting, follow these key steps for a seamless experience.

Deposits and Payment

To finalize your booking, new clients must provide a 50% deposit at least 48 hours before the scheduled service. This deposit confirms your booking and allows the pet sitter to prepare. This can be paid via secure online payment with Stripe, Cash or Check at the Meet and Greet, or via mobile payments such as Venmo or ApplePay.

Scheduling Availability

At this time, we cannot guarantee 24/7 supervision of your pets during your booking period. If you anticipate needing around-the-clock care, consider exploring alternative options. We focus on quality service and have a small team, limiting the number of clients and balancing our other job commitments. We can guarantee that all scheduling of the pet sitter will be discussed with you prior to booking.

Importance of Communication

Having open communication with your pet sitter is essential. Prior to finalizing your booking, discuss any specific needs your pets may have, such as medication schedules, dietary restrictions, or behavioral quirks. This understanding will ensure your pets receive the attention they need.

Contacting Your Pet Sitter

Don’t hesitate to ask questions regarding the booking process or specific care instructions. A clear dialogue helps build trust, making your pets feel more comfortable with their caretaker.

Steps for a Positive Pet Sitting Experience

Taking some extra steps before your trip can significantly enhance your pet's experience.

Prepare Your Pet

Before the sitter arrives, help your pet adjust to the situation. If possible, introduce them to the sitter to establish familiarity with the required meet and greet. Ensuring your pet has a comfortable and familiar space will help ease their anxiety.

Provide Essentials

Leave detailed care instructions and ensure your pet has all the necessary supplies. This includes food, medications, toys, and any other items they may require. This preparation ensures your pet's routines remain uninterrupted while you are away.

Safety Precautions

Make sure your home is secure for pets. Double-check that windows and doors are locked and that any toxic substances, such as cleaning products and rodenticides, are out of reach.

Special Case Considerations

Pet sitting needs can differ greatly based on the variety of pets you have. Discussing specific requirements ahead of time ensures that your pets receive the appropriate care.

Unique Animal Needs

For pets that are not typical household animals—like reptiles or farm animals—unique considerations will apply. Be sure to communicate your care preferences clearly when scheduling to guarantee the sitter is prepared for these needs.

Final Thoughts

Scheduling pet sitting does not have to be daunting. By understanding the services offered, outlining costs, and establishing good communication, you can ensure that your pets are cared for lovingly while you enjoy your time away. Prior preparation and open lines of communication will make a world of difference—your furry friends will appreciate it!
